When Two Different Worlds Collide
WHAT FOREIGNERS LIKE AND DISLIKE MOST ABOUT AMERICAN MEN AND WOMEN AND OUR WAY OF LIFE...
By Maximillien de Lafayette
|
AMERICANS VERSUS FOREIGNERS:
What foreigners like and dislike most about us
Before I go into some details and explain:
1-Why the majority of foreign countries lost faith in the United States
(Who cares? Yah, right!)?
2-Why many foreigners look down on American men and women?
3-Why the majority of foreigners would never trust us again?
4-Why American women scare the hell out of them?
5-Why contemporary American art is falling apart in Europe, Latin America,
Africa and the Middle East? 6-Why those bloody antagonistic foreigners keep on coming to America and suck our blood, eat our honey and drink our milk?
7-Why do we allow unfriendly and potentially dangerous foreigners who
live in the United States to freely demonstrate in the street and create
social and political chaos, when Americans living abroad are deprived from
similar rights and freedom of expression?
|
WHAT CONFUSES OR AMAZES FOREIGNERS:
1-A mall at the
Pentagon.
In almost 99,99% of foreign countries, you will never find a boutique or a
shop nearby a military high command post. They would not allow merchants
and shop keepers to open shops and boutiques in the vicinity of a
strategically positioned and located military centers. And most certainly,
not in the basement or a parking lot of a ministry of defense.
2-Americans' Passion
for football.
In America, football players are Gods! Role models, superstars,
millionaires, celebrities. In 92% of foreign countries, they are simply
“sport people”. Usually, in the majority of foreign countries, from France
to Guatemala and from Sudan to Austria, only uneducated people and low
class people become soccer (football) players. And they never enjoy a
global fame or become wealthy, unless they are really extraordinary with a
magic touch such as Pele of Brazil, Eusepio of Portugal, Bochkash of
Hungary, Maradona of Argentina and Bobby Moore of England. The rest of
them remain obscure and hard working middle class people. 3-High percentage of divorced American women. Almost 89% of Europeans, 79% of Latinos and 99% of Middle Easterners, Near Easterners and Arabs believe that marriage has been desecrated in America. Every time they hear the news about this star getting married to that star, they will automatically tell you that they will divorce in a few months. Statistics show that 72% of American women are or were divorced once upon a time. It is really alarming.
4-Americans feel privileged to be invited to embassies receptions.
What foreigners dislike most is to be around politicians with big mouth,
media people known for their sarcasm and biased reporting and to eat and
dine in the company of politicians and foreign diplomats. |
5-Americans consumers
who prefer Japanese cars over American cars.
A famous European saying goes like this: “The happiest man on earth is
this man who has an American car and a Japanese wife, because none of them
would quit on him”. Foreigners still believe that American cars are
the best in the world. The fact that Americans rush to buy Japanese cars
indicate to foreigners that Yankees do not make sense.
6-The outfit of the
American professional woman, more particularly the executive one.
You know, the one with a coat/jacket, man’s couture cut and the boring
standardized fluffy tie. They hate it! They consider it a product without
originality and character.
7-Popularity of wearing
pantyhose without underwear.
Yet, boy-a-boy, Arab men love it, as long as, it is not their wives who
are wearing it.
8-American men’s
obsession with women’s big breast.
African, Asian and Arab men love to look at an American woman’s prosperous
breast. But, the cultured European men and more particularly the French
men consider the big breast of a woman as a sign of vulgarity. To them,
women with big breast are vulgar. This idea came to life at the dawn of
the Parisian haute couture and the beginning of the Parisian fashion
runway. The whole story began with Christian Dior and his “scrambled egg
breast” mannequins in Paris at the turn of the century.
9- American women intense
interest in breast enhancement.
We will not talk about that. We already know what they are talking about.
Nevertheless, there is a lot of hypocrisy in their statements, for their
biggest and favorite stars had a “big bazooka breast” like Silvana Mangano,
Rosanna Podesta, Sophia Loren, Ursula Andress, etc……But, it is quite
accurate to say that, the most “respected” and talented foreign stars had
an “intellectual breast”, meaning regular size, such as Marina Vlady,
Simone Signoret (when she was young), Ingrid Bergman, Anouk Aime, Danielle
Darrieux, etc…
10-Taking out the trash as
the married man’s responsibility.
This, trashes them out completely. But, their wives like it!
|
|
11-Frequent and popular
use of savings coupons.
Holly God! They hate it. They consider the use of savings coupons as an
indication of avarice, stinginess and cheapness. They hate it most, when
they have to stay in line at the supermarkets check outs waiting for those
who are digging in their purses or bags for these bloody coupons. And it
gets worst, when they see a woman flashing and flashing and flashing tons
of them. They go ape!!
13-Americans calling
their friends and folks only on the weekend to save money.
14-Americans splitting
the restaurant tabs in public.
To foreigners, this is the
ultimate public insult. The Arabs have a saying “ Eat bread and olive at
home. But when you go out, buy the whole damned restaurant.” In France
they say: “A tout seigneur, tout honneur.”
15-American sex and marriage counseling.
This is a no no! A taboo! Many Arabs object to any form and kind of a sex
counseling. Are you kidding? Some of them will not even allow their wives
to have a regular medical check up if the physician has a moustache!!
Usually, their wives medical visitations are monitored. As to marriage
counseling, they consider it as a direct interference in their conjugal
and marital affairs and an insult to their manhood. Europeans are
different. Although they might take marriage counseling into
consideration, they remain very skeptical about sex counseling. More
skeptical about American sex counseling, for they consider American sex
counselors and therapists as nuts and pretentious. They do strongly
believe that the greatest number of those sex therapists in America failed
in their sex life and need sex counselors themselves!
16-American citizens
referring to the President and the First Lady by their given names and or
shortening their names.
Very true. Have you during one of your visits to France, ever tried to
call President General de Gaulle by his first name (as we do sometimes in
America) or shorten his name to Charlie or Gauly? Have you? Ask those who
did, what happened to them?! Especially those who were detained at La
Prefecture or at La Gendarmerie!!! Mon Dieu!!!
|
17-Unfamiliarity of
Americans with popular artists and stars who are very well known in their
countries.
18-American women
washing the dog in their bathtub.
19-Renting a tuxedo,
even shoes for one time big affair.
20-American men
constantly wearing a bright yellow tie to look sharp and stylish.
21-To be unable to open
a bank account without a social security number.
This is a novelty to them, for it is very true, in many foreign countries,
you don’t need a social security card to open an account. Just flash your
national ID card and boom, kaboom, you’re in.
22-Closing schools and
establishments and sending home government employees, each time it snows
or gets very hot.
To foreigner, this is absurd. In many foreign countries, when it snows or
gets very cold almost all the time, like in Russia, Finland, Scandinavia,
snows and cold weather are not a major inconvenience. In foreign countries
where hot weather is part of the living folklore, shops, institutions and
governments keep up running their business as usual.
23-Expensive auto
repair bills on European cars.
24-Many American women
who were the “ensemble” of very tight blue jeans and jogging shoes.
To foreigners, nothing is more “far from elegance” than wearing jogging
shoes in public. What they dislike most, is when women who are working in
offices and government buildings bring to work, in their bags and purses,
“those shoes”, later to wear them when they get out.
|
25-The one-night-stand.
26-Very few Americans
speak foreign languages.
They dislike that. More so, when they meet American foreign service senior
officials abroad who totally ignore their language. This is why,
sometimes, when American tourists visiting a foreign country, stop a
native in the street to ask for direction, they get the wrong one, on
purpose!!
27-Schedule C
appointees in the federal government.
28-The president of the United States allowing members of the media and TV
REPORTERS TO ASK HIM ALL KINDS OF QUESTIONS, during a foreign dignitary or
head of state visit to The White House.
29-American women being
picked up in a fish market.
30-American married men
who answer “In Search Of” ads.
31-American married men
cruising supermarkets between 10:00 AM and 4:30 PM. 32-Best looking American men in cosmopolitan cities are gay.
33-Faceless/opinion-less American politicians and directors of federal
agencies.
34-American lawyers
“retainer” fees.
Other forms and agreements on and about lawyers fees
payments are considered. “Retainer” is not customary in many foreign
countries 35-American lawyers who advertise on TV and promise you to “get you all what you deserve under the law” and falsely pretend “
|
|
you don’t pay us a thing
until you get your money”. The truth is, that very few Americans know that
lawyers in almost 99.99% of foreign countries are forbidden by law and by
virtue of the ethical code of the bar association, to publicly advertise.
Lawyers abroad do not advertise. It is considered unethical and even
illegal.
36-New York’s taxis.
37-Abbreviations and
shortenings of name and sentences.
For instance, greeting a bishop “Hey Bish!” or asking your sister to wait
for you becomes “One sec, siss!”. They don’t like it. Particularly the
Arabs and the Latinos. I can understand that. Particularly, when lovely
Latin gentlemen have very long names such as Jorge Emanuel Fernando de
Cordoba de Malaga de La Cruz de La After Tomorrow”. Look who is talking?
MOI ? with a name as
long as (My full name) Jean-Maximillien de La Croix de Lafayette, son of
Charles Louis Philippes Bernard de La…de La…de La… !!!, anyway.
I understand what
they are talking about, even though, I was born confused with an ugly
face. 38-How could possibly, the budget of the wealthiest nation on earth (USA) be in deficit ? They become to worry about the Dollars they bought or foreign currencies they have recently exchanged or hid undress the mattress. 39-American folks standing in lines on the sidewalk waiting to have a glimpse or a glance at famous people, royalties (Late Princess Di, for example) or movie stars!!
40-Why Americans keep on watering the grass of their yard, only to cut it
a few days later, and vice versa.
41-TV weather people predictions:
When in his or her forecast, the TV weatherperson or meteorologist
predicts a “50 percent possibility of showers”. What drives foreigners
crazy is when the weatherperson say “and the degree is 50 at the airport”.
They are confused. They are mad. They scream: “For God’s sake, who lives
at the airport?”. Boy, you have to admit, they are funny. They are mad
too!
42-The price tags
on goods, merchandise and items in stores, supermarkets and particularly
on big items like cars, such as :”$19.999” instead of $20.000. This drives
them crazy!!
43-Some TV commercials
like these:” Batteries not included” or “Not available in Alaska”,
“Additional fees may apply”, “9 out of 10 doctors prefer this over that.”,
“buy one, get one free”. The worst of all is what they saw in seafood
restaurants!! This is a bigggggy! “All you can eat”.
|
44-American men and women walking barefoot in their homes.
Exclude the Japanese.
All other foreigners including the nomads and Bedouins dislike taking off
their shoes when they enter somebody’s home. Many cynical fashion
designers and famous fashion models (men and women) in Paris commented on
this American habit and explained to me that “Americans have ugly feet,
big and tough feet because they walk barefoot at home.”, they added: “Many
American men have bizarre shape of feet and distorted toes nails because
they walk bare foot and wear very cheap shoes. American women who wear all
time snickers and jogging shoes have usually two toes “exuberantly and
drastically” bigger than all the other toes. They stick out like an
escargots pair of forks.” How about that??? Something else. According to
them, all those who walk barefoot are low class and are not to be trusted
because they have lost their sense of refined manners and etiquette. BY NATURE AND AUTOMATICALLY…FOREIGNERS WHO
VISIT AMERICA WILL COMPLAIN ABOUT MANY THINGS IN THIS COUNTRY. One of the most effective ways to learn about the psychological pre-disposition of foreigners visiting the United States is to listen to their complaints and reproaches when they check-in a hotel in the United States. Here is a list I compiled on their most common comments and sarcastic criticism. I retrieved the list from a book I wrote on American hospitality under the title “Quality Standards and Measurements in the American Hospitality Industry”
|
for the American Hospitality Institute Incorporated, when I had the honor to serve as its President and CEO in 1999. LIST OF FOREIGNERS COMPLAINTS: 1-Room’s temperature control. 2-Slow access to elevators. 3-Slow check-in and check-out transactions. 4-Parking. 5-Many concierges do not speak their language. 6-Inaccessibility to their country newspapers. Many hotels don’t have foreign newspapers and magazines. 7-Small quantity of coffee bags in their rooms. 8-Not enough sugar packs in their rooms. 9-Many rooms do not have ashtrays. 10-Beds are too close to the walls. 11-The small size of the rooms. 12-Concierges can’t get them tickets to their favorite shows or major attractions in town.
|
|
13-Hotel’s restaurants closing early. 14-High prices at the hotel’s gift shops. 15-Room service food is always cold. 16-Mineral or spring water is not freely provided in their rooms. 17-Wake-up calls are never on time. 18-No shoe-shine service is available. And if they leave their shoes outside the door of their rooms, they will never find them again. 19-High way robbery prices on long distance calls, faxes and telegrams. 20-No live entertainment. 21-Room mini-bar drinks (mini-bottles in the refrigerator) are extremely expensive. 22-The television set is far away from the bed. 23-Wine list have only American wine or very few French selections. 24-The bread is not warm enough or crispy.
25-Not enough bread on the
table.
26-The waiter did not
replace or bring new silverware for each meal.
27-The cashew, pistachio
and peanuts bags are too small and expensive.
28-The windows in their
room don’t open.
29-There is not enough
hangers in the room closet to hand their clothes on.
30-American food has no
taste and no flavor.
Interviewing foreigners who became business owners in the United States,
here is the negative things they had to say about American employees
working for them:
1-I knew somebody will screw up. 2-No loyalty. 3-It is so difficult to find good help in America.. 4-They will always steal from me.
|
5-They will sue your ass in a heart beat. 6-First, you tell them you gonna to tell them. And then, you tell them. Then, you tell them again. 7-Everybody gets paid here, except me. 8-They are my employees, but I work for them. 9-With those American employees, demanding and bitching all the time, I cannot pay myself a salary. 10-If you want to stay in business, hire only your mother and own sons. If you can’t, hire those you know from your own country. American employees will always look upon me as a foreigner, no matter what I do, and no matter how good and generous I am toward them. 11-American employees will always think that foreigners who succeeded in this country have more than enough. They would not miss an opportunity to steal from me, to take whatever they can, whether it is cash, merchandise or stuff from the office. 12-American employees are creative in theft. They will always figure out new ways to steal. 13-American employees always complain they don’t make enough money.
Interviewing foreigners who became business owners in the United States,
here is the negative things they had to say about American employees
working for them:
14-It was not the IRS. It
was my American employees who bankrupted me.
15-Don’t kid yourself,
they are not your friends.
16-American employees are
always looking for another job.
17-They don’t mind coming
early to get their paycheck.
|
18-American employees
always keep on telling you how hard they work for you.
19-American employees spy
on each other, dislike each other, but when they leave the office, they
leave together to get drunk.
20-Ask them to work two
weekends in a row, and see how many will get sick so fast.
21-American employees
constantly complain about favoritism but, don’t mind if they were the
favorite ones.
22-They want a fun place
and a family environment at work, yet, they don’t trust each other.
|
|
23-Would they call long
distance every five minutes, if they were using their own phone?
Interviewing foreigners
who worked in the United States, here is the negative things they had to
say about their American employers:
1-Complaining to American employers will not result in any
change. 2-We were not given timely, reliable and truthful information about the job and the company.
3-As foreigners, they did not trust us. We were not treated
with trust and respect.
Interviewing foreigners
who became business owners in the United States, here is the negative
things they had to say about American employees working for them: 4-They don’t trust foreigners and foreigners do not trust them. Still we need each other. 5-We will always have problem with direct supervision and direct supervisors in American companies. 6-In big American companies, you are nothing but a serial number. 7-American employers reprimand us in front of customers and fellow employees. They don’t care about your own feelings and whether you have been offended or deeply hurt in your feelings. 8-In American companies, there is a lot of kissing asses. 9-In American companies, the supervisors kick asses of the lower employees and kiss the asses of their superiors. No honor and no self esteem. 10-In American companies, you are never sure when they will fire you. 11-In American companies, stand up for your rights and you will get fired on the spot. 12-In American companies, there is too much pressure to learn something new. 13-Haven’t seen a promise that has been kept. 14-Promotions depend on who you suck up to. 15-Meetings are a waste of time. 16-We would like to see an 80 hour check.
|
17-American supervisors always stress bad points, never good ones. 18-They give you a raise after 3 months to keep you on the job if they need you badly, later to forget about you for 300 years. 19-They send us to training and who is training us? The guy we are complaining about. Terrific! 20-Thank you for allowing me to keep my mouth shut. 21-We keep hearing stuff like this: “Please hire employees who can speak English.” 22-I miss my supervisor when she is not here and I miss her more when she is around.

SOCIETY, REFINED MANNERS AND ETIQUETTE
ANALOGY BETWEEN AMERICAN NOUVELLE SOCIAL ELITE AND THE INTERNATIONAL ELITE
|
SOCIETY, REFINED MANNERS AND ETIQUETTE
By Maximillien de Lafayette
AMERICAN NOUVELLE SOCIAL ELITE VERSUS THE INTERNATIONAL ELITEBrief Analogy: Differences and SimilaritiesON HOUSING,
HOMES, RESIDENCES AND MANSIONS
American nouvelle elite:
1-Many of them live in apartments and
condominiums.
2- Apartments and condominiums are scattered
in different areas of the city.
3-They might buy a previously owned homes.
4-They trade houses.
5-Many look upon the purchase of a home as
“investment”. 6-Some build their own mansions.
7-Some purchase new residences. International elite:
1-Very few of them lives
in apartments or condominiums, unless, if they have traded or sold their
homes to move into the city for business purposes.
2-Elite apartments are called apartments and not condominiums. Big deal! Please don’t call fruit jelly “jelly” in their presence. Marmalade is more appropriate and proper. The same mambo-jumbo jargon applies to condos and apartments. They are categorically located in particular and well-known areas. Usually, old and traditionally established neighborhoods. 3-Their homes and mansions were built for their families years ago. This is why and how they inherited those mansions and lived in them for years. Some families (present and past members) lived in the same place for hundreds of years. 4- The entire residence has one cache, one style. If the style is Louis XIV, everything is Louis XIV. Very inconvenient, because many of those collected or preserved antiques and furniture pieces are not comfortable or are very delicate to sit on! Bring your own chair with you, just to be on the safe side! 5-If the residence has a very austere and traditional ambience, the colors of the walls become dark and somber. Burgundy and dark royal blue colors dominate everywhere, they are the “couleur de preference”, even in the water closets and powder rooms. If the woman is the one who wears pants in the house, then the dark colors would change to pastel and champagne rose colors.
|
|
|
SOCIETY: ETIQUETTE
6-They don’t trade houses and locations. 7-They always built their own mansions and never purchased a new one, except when they buy or rent ski cabins, beach cabins and bungalows on the Riviera, Biarritz, St. Raphael, Ibiza and Rio de Janeiro. 8-They don’t buy their furniture and ornamental items from one single place, store, shops, boutique or gallery. They want to be eclectic and different yet, they want to remain “purely” classic. Try to figure it out!! 9-They never buy art reproductions. But gladly will purchase a fake masterpiece if the husband can sell it to foreigners, most preferable to Americans who don’t know much about art. 10-Many of their residence are “museums”. Culture, education, arts, history, style, elegance and wealth are every where, in every room, even in the attic. ON MONEY
American nouvelle elite:
1-Money is extremely important. Bank accounts
and credit history are primordial.
2-Wealth is displayed quite often.
3-Money is used in and for big deals, investment, shopping, travels, cruises, charitable causes, children education, stocks, corporate shar |
